Points of Return
March 8 - July 7, 2024

Selected by a panel of artists and industry experts including Studios resident and filmmaker Jenn Nkiru, Studio 01 takes its title from the first-ever exhibition at Somerset House Studios in 2016, which featured works by original residents.

Today’s Studio 01 artists are enorê, Leila Dear and Ufuoma Essi. Titled by the exhibiting artists, Points of Return expresses their convergence around themes of memory, interconnectedness, and alternative modes of existence.

Work details: all i can hold, 2024, wall installation consisting of multiple parian porcelain printed pieces

Exhibition text:

enorê’s all i can hold consists of a collection of 3D printed porcelain sculptures that draw from themes of ghosts, death and cycles; converging with the earthy medium of clay. The installation fluctuates between digitally constructed bodies and their physical traces in the exhibition space, appearing and disappearing as they exist between their virtual origins and material embodiment. Created through the depositing of clay layer-by-layer, over time; each piece uniquely evidences its own construction process and the failures that occur therein. The reconfiguration of the virtual data body, stripped of its flesh, into a new physical shell in clay points to a new type of matter; one which exists between the slippery gaps of translation, between virtual and physical, here and there, tangible and ethereal. Digital objects become as malleable as clay, straining under the tension of their existence as virtual entities, being altered and reconfigured both virtually and spatially.
